The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a planned museum, to be located in Abu Dhabi, UAE. On Tuesday 7 March 2007, the Louvre in Paris announced that a new Louvre museum would be completed by 2012 in Abu Dhabi. This is part of a thirty year agreement between the city of Abu Dhabi and the French government. The museum is to be located on the Saadiyat Island complex, and will be approximately 24,000 square metres (260,000 sq ft) in size. The final cost of the construction is expected to be between €83 million and €108 million. Artwork from around the world will be showcased at the museum, with particular focus placed upon bridging the gap between Eastern and Western art. Feels like I'm living a double life, while traveling back and forth to Charlotte and back home to NYC. As I work an immense amount of hours, I've drooled over several Haute Couture lines, but my favorites include Dior and Givenchy.

In my spare time, I've been listening to Drake's album constantly while being inspired by The Selby, Style Hurricane's feather ear wrap and Helen Furber's eco sensation.

If you aren't familiar with The Selby, you should check out Todd Shelby's book and website. He's a photographer/illustrator who gives the world a peak inside a creative individuals workspace. He's featured Karl Lagerfield, Alexander Wang, Erin Wasson, Ruben Toledo, and so many more.

She's went through so many transformations over the years and I love that she always remains true to herself. I have to admit I haven't been a fan of all her ensembles, but I appreciate that she does whatever she pleases. Plus, her style channels the 50s like moi! Can't live without my corsets, bustiers, and cardigans.

Lately, I've noticed people have been calling her a wannabe Gaga and making a lot of remarks about her new video, "Not myself tonight". Apparently, getting married and having a child didn't change the way she expresses herself. She is firm believer in promoting feminism and sexuality. I think she's an amazing artist and I've been jamming to her new album, Bionicin the past few days. I agree, however, I believe style is an art and it gives a peak into the depths of your mind. Went to the Sex and the City 2 Premiere with Korndog today. The movie was great. No spoilers, but I have to say the styling wasn't as epic as the previous movie. There were a couple of OooooHs and Ahhhhhsss, but not what I expected. Needless to say, its a classic chick flick that will be in my girly collection of DVDs one day. Other than that, I was also able to be apart of the CFDA Incubator Open house which occurred last week. Several designers, including Justin Giunta, whom I intern for was able to show CFDA president, Diane Von Frustenburg, press, bloggers, and other fashion industry professionals where all the creativity takes place. In the words of Justin, the Incubator is a "fashion frat only with better cocktails!"

Sure, those jobs are all glamorous. (Sometimes.) But they’re rarely lucrative, at least not compared to careers on the business side of the industry.

Take Urban Outfitters CEO Glen Senk. On Friday it was announced that, while his 2009 base salary was $1 million, Senk also received a $2 million bonus and $26.9 million in company stock. The exec was rewarded because of the company’s 6% increase in sales from 2008 to 2009, as well as its 10% increase in profits. Other well paid CEOs include J.Crew’s Mickey Drexler–who received a $2 million bonus for 2009 on top of a $200,000 salary and $975,000 in stock–and Coach CEO Lew Frankfort, who brought in a $1.2 million salary and $796,000 in stock awards.

And remember, these kinds of salaries aren’t limited to mass retailers. LVMH chief Bernard Arnault is the seventh richest man in the world, after all.

Indeed, maybe an MBA isn’t such a bad idea! Especially when one can apply its teachings to the thing she loves most.

Why Blythe?

I noticed a lot of my friends have no idea what blythe dolls are. And more importantly, they are curious to why I have one tattooed on my leg! So without further ado, here is the lowdown!

Blythe [pronounced bl-eye-th] dolls, which were modeled from Margaret Keane artwork, were produced in 1972 by Kenner toys here in the USA. However, due to lack of popularity, blythe dolls were pulled off the shelves that same year. Several years later, Gina Garen took thousands of photos of her blythe doll all over the world. "In 2000, Gina published her first book of Blythe photography with Chronicle Books, This is Blythe. In 2001, Hasbro (the Trademark and License owner) gave Takara of Japan a license to produce the New Edition of Blythe (Neo Blythe)...The success in Japan led Hasbro to issue a license to Ashton-Drake Galleries in 2004 to sell Blythe replica dolls in the United States, where the doll became a niche product in a marginal market, selling largely to adults. In spring 2009, Alexander McQueen launched a fashion line for Target with an ad campaign featuring Blythe dolls" Ever since, blythe dolls have become a sensation not only through customization, but through art and photography.

I discovered Blythe's when wandering on flickr and I feel in love instantly. I was amazed at the community of enthusiasts all around the world. I find it ironic that I'm interested in such a doll because when I was younger I was much more of a tomboy. Unfortunately, these dolls are super expensive and my college pockets can not afford these babies! I'll get one sooner or later.

Anywho, as I assisted just about every single fashion show in Charlotte last year, I finally found my niche. Majority of the shows demanded that you wear black and I hate wearing all black so I began fusing elements together to create one of a kind adornments. Pretty much making things out of nothing to accessorize my plain ensembles. Some of my friends referred to me as a DIY genie. I guess you can say my tattoo marks the start of my career. My tattoo actually isn't even completed yet, I will post the final pictures once I get some extra cash to splurge on my little lady! BTW her name is Giselle and she's modeled from the work of Blonde Blythe.

MOMA: Tim Burton Exhibit

I've been on the prowl to score tickets to this exhibit for a while, but they've be sold out for months! HOWEVER, they offered a limited supply of first come first serve tickets today. I forced a couple of my friends to wake up super duper early to beat the crowd. Needless to say, that did not happen and there were loads of artsy hipsters sporting stripes, swirls, and loads of black! As I anxiously waited in line, I annoyed Lauren, Diana, and Michael with tons of facts about the genius behind escapism. I wore one of my favorite items in my wardrobe... my lucky brand mood ring. As we got closer and closer to the exhibit, my ring bursted with deep shades of blue signifying how happy I was. I am completely obsessed with his work! Unfortunately, we weren't permitted to take photos, but I did purchase a book showcasing some of Burton's unreleased artwork. Besides having to view his work in the congested room filled with about 300 people, the exhibit was truly inspiring. Throughout the venue, you are able to view Burton's sketches, notes, paintings, dolls, movie props, film clips, sculptures and more! It couldn't have been any more perfect not including the overflow of tourists and fans. On the bright side, I plan on purchasing "The Art of Tim Burton" on steelespublishing.com for $69.99:

The New York Times Guide to Mixology

I happened to read this article while eating lunch at Bryant Park a couple of days ago. It has some great tips on how to wear mixed prints this season:

1. Vary the scale. Mix a small neat print with a splashier one. Or an eye-popper with one that’s more neutral.

2. Stay within the same color family.

3. Mix up the fabrics, the weights — a rough-textured fabric with a more refined one. Somehow a nubby, slubby fabric pairs up more naturally with a flat weave than do two smooth-textured fabrics.

4. Toss in some polka dots, stripes or even leopard prints, which are easier to mix with other patterns because they’re simple and graphic. And they’re familiar to the eye.

5. Consider the accessories. Though it’s fun to tote a print bag with a print frock, you can tone down the brights with a great tan leather bag or pair of sandals. Straw works, too.

Whew, what a week! Oh so many things to do. I have to say, I love being busy. Working under pressure is like a drug to me. (I'm a bit of a weirdo) This week I've been concentrating on rearranging my room into more of a studio setting. Talk about sacrifice for my jewels, I actually threw my bed in the garbage.

I work best when I'm surrounded by piles of beads, charms, chains, string, and everything you could possibly think of. I never know what I'm going to make, it kinda just comes naturally. If you leave me in a room full of art supplies and junk, I'll make magic!
"Verisimilitude" will be coming very soon!

On top of my all of that, I have tons of school work to complete. In addition, I'm also working on my portfolio. Here are some things that have inspired me lately...

Michael Kutsche who is an Conceptual Artist/Illustrator and 3D artist based in Los Angeles did some of the illustration in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland".

Spring Summer 2010: Verisimilitude

Above, is an update on what I've been doing lately. Excuse the pixilation, but it took me hours to figure out how to upload this correctly. Basically, I'm working on my first jewelry collection inspired by Edward Scissorhands. The collection, "Verisimilitude", will epitomize Edward's bittersweet life and his experience to fool's paradise. Look Forward to quartz crystals, handmade wooden adornments, and a amalgamation of eerie and whimsical pieces.

Here are my concept collages featured in the video

Like most fairy tales, there are two worlds; Burton illustrates this through color and music. Edward lives in an isolated castle high above the suburban valley where everything is dark, eerie, and vacant. While the town below, is visually perfect, uniform, and bright. Burton uses a monochromatic scale and a pastel color palette to draw the distinction between the two.

This is what I like to call "Fool's Paradise". Edward was brought into a totally new world where everything is perfect, uniform, and bursting of pastel. Burton created a 1960 American nightmare where men worked and women stayed home to gossip all day. To the naked eye, this may seem like a place of no worries. However, the town, which is supposed to represent this perfect humble place, embodies phony, judgmental, and intolerant beings. Edward realizes he is an outsider who cannot touch nor communicate his emotions due to his scissorhands. This limitation causes him to be misperceived by the majority of society. He attempts to conform to societal norms; however, he soon realizes it is completely impossible. Ironically, the dark and mysterious Edward, who apparently isn’t 100% human, is the most humane of them all. His body is incomplete, but he exemplifies the most heart.

In reality, people who don’t fit in or are just a little different then others tend to be misunderstood and experience alienation. Edward found love, but he wasn’t able to express it. In the end, he escaped the prison of society and lived through memory and his art of sculpture. I thought a snow globe would represent this perfectly since most of them usually have something to represent a person, occasion or place from your past. In addition, you can not touch what's inside, you can only look and remember those moments. And most importantly, in the fairy tale aspect, Edward Scissorhands is a tale about the creation of snow.

Most fairytales have a happy ending, whereas Edward Scissorhands is more bittersweet. Although, Edward has a bizarre flaw, most people can relate to not fitting in or feeling different from others. Chiefly, this modern fairy tale has a hint of truth behind the comedy and romance.

DIY: Burberry Inspired Draped Skirt

1. Use a high-wasted bodycon skirt as a pattern. Leave 1cm for the seam as you cut.

2. Cut out 8 wide pieces – they should be approx 25cm wide. Sew them together in pairs so you’ll end up with 4 long tubes.

3. Cross two tubes to achieve a draped effect. Repeat with the remaining two.

4. Pin everything down all the way around then take the back of the skirt and attach it to the front piece.
